The Maharashtra Chess League was launched two years ago. The idea to start this event was twofold. 1) To bring national level players in both, men and women section to Pune so that junior players from Pune are exposed to high level chess and 2) to put fair amount of money in the pockets of these national players to help them further their career.

It is known as India’s only ‘League Format Chess Tournament’.  MCL is a brainchild of Grandmaster Abhijeet Kunte and Mr. Aniruddha Deshpande, one of the leading real estate developers in Pune and huge sports enthusiastic.

MCL is normally a five day event held in PYC Hindu Gymkhana, Pune. This year the tournament is getting into 3rd edition and scheduled in the 2nd week of June, 2015.

In the last two editions, we have seen 10 men and 8 women grandmasters participated in the tournament. Pune has witnessed top Indian chess players like Suryashekhar Ganguly, Abhijeet Kunte, Abhijeet Gupta in men’s category and Tania Sachdeo, Mery Ann Gomes, Padmini Raut, Soumya Swaminathan in women’s category playing for the title. This year world no.2 in women’s ranking Korenu Humpy, India no. 4 Vidit Gujarathi, S. P. Seturaman have confirmed their participation.

The tournament is conducted by an organising committee under the auspices of the Maharshtra Chess Association. Apart from the technical members of the committee, we also have on board five times world champion Vishwanathan Anand as our brand ambassador.
